Meet the Team: Ken Dicks
Welcome to Reggora’s "Meet the Team" series! Reggora is powered by a team of smart, hard working people dedicated to the mission of appraisal innovation, and we've all taken very different paths to get here. In this series, we'll introduce you to different members of the Reggora family. This week features Ken Dicks, who joined the Reggora team in July 2020 to oversee appraisal compliance and valuation product initiatives.
Ken Dicks: Director of Appraisal Compliance & Initiatives
Q: Tell us about yourself. Where did you grow up? Go to school?
A: I was born and raised in Staten Island, New York, attended college in Tampa, Florida, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of South Florida.
Q: Where did you work before Reggora?
A: I began my career as an appraiser right out of college with a local appraisal firm in Tampa, Florida with an initial focus on residential, then shifting to commercial real estate appraisal. We relocated to New England in 1988 and in the time since, I have worked as an independent appraiser, review appraiser within several local-based banks, commercial and industrial tax Assessor for the City of Worcester, and appraisal program director for Boston-based Santander Bank. I earned the MAI designation with the Appraisal Institute in 2002 and served as President of the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Chapter of the Appraisal Institute in 2015.
Q: What drew you to Reggora?
A: In one word: change. The appraisal industry, just like the real estate markets, is in a constant state of change. I honestly believe we are on the verge of significant changes - changes on how we deliver products and services, how we service customers, and how we achieve our goals. Being able to join the Reggora team at this time is both exciting and rewarding.
Q: What’s something that people might not know about Reggora?
A: While there are many pieces and parts to the Reggora team, the amount of collaboration, sharing of ideas and genuine willingness to solve problems shows the extraordinary level of unity that is required to facilitate and implement positive change. It is a testament to the character of not only this young company, but the individuals that make up this team.
Q: What is a fun fact about yourself that people wouldn't know?
A: Whether it is developing an appraisal or facilitating an appraisal, appraising involves problem solving - each assignment provides its own unique challenge, the fun part is identifying, adapting, and ultimately overcoming that challenge. One of my most interesting real estate appraisal assignments was the valuation of five small-scale hydro-electric generating plants in Central Massachusetts. While that assignment was 20+ years ago, it was a significant learning experience for me as it was something I had never encountered before - and it tested my skills and abilities in a positive way. To this day they are still operating, harnessing and adapting to infrastructure put into place more than 100 years ago, and hidden from plain view and silently humming along adding renewable energy to the grid.
